The 2019 ACI Asia-Pacific/World Annual General Assembly, Conference & Exhibition hosted the Environment Forum on Tuesday April 2, 2019 and the subjects of climate change resilience and adaptation, and combatting wildlife trafficking was the primary focus.
The first portion of the session was focused on climate change resilience and adaptation and the need for airports to understand the risks and vulnerability of their infrastructures, both existing and new, and to become more resilient to climate change.
The panel discussion was moderated by Wendy Weir from Brisbane Airport and included the following panel members: Rachel Burbidge from EuroControl, Chrystelle Damar from the ICAO Air Transport Bureau, Adam Davis of AECOM, Sebastien Lacoin from Kansai Airport and Caroline Sapriel from CS&A.
Panel members shared their views on the multiple consequences for the airport industry of increased weather-related events, and provided fruitful insights on measures that airport operators can undertake to take action and continue their efforts to maintain business operations as risks of flooding, typhoons, drought and weather-related disruptions become more likely in the coming years.
The second portion of the forum was related to raising awareness on the subject of wildlife trafficking. It was re-emphasized that this global epidemic is the forth most lucrative global crime estimated to be worth US$23 billion a year. This illicit trade exposes passengers and staff to health and safety hazards, while harming corporate and national reputations throughout industry supply chains.
The panel discussion was moderated by Juliana Scavuzzi from ACI World and included the following panel members: Claire Beastall from ROUTES, Mike Kilburn from Hong Kong Airport Authority, Rosanne Blijleven from Royal Schiphol Group, Nathalie Herbelles from ACI World and Naomi Gitau from Kenya Airport Authority.
In order to help the aviation community to address this global issue, ACI announced the release of a Best Practice Case Studies from Selected Airports on Combatting Illegal Wildlife Trade. This free resource describes trafficking cased from various airports around the world and the role they played along with other aviation stakeholders to fight against wildlife trafficking.
During the forum afternoon break, ACI invited conference members to celebrate the launch of the following two new guidance documents:
Airport Business Continuity Management Handbook
Highlighting the collaborative efforts between members and service providers in the fields of facilitation, environment, safety and security, the Airport Business Continuity Management Handbook includes guidance on how to address, plan and mitigate the negative impact of disruptions to “normal” airport operations.
Combatting Human Trafficking Handbook
A free resource that draws on experience of airports that are already taking action in the fight against human trafficking is now available. In the Combatting Human Trafficking handbook, airport operators will find materials and advice to strengthen the efforts in awareness, training and reporting, and how airports can assist, irrespective of their size or location, and play a significant role to put a stop to this appalling crime of human trafficking.
